KState’s Samuels suspended

Moments before tipoff with No. 1 seed Syracuse in the East region, Kansas State announced that senior forward Jamar Samuels will not play today due to an “eligibility concern.”

“Jamar Samuels is currently unavailable for today’s game, because of an eligibility concern,” said K-State athletic director John Currie. “We are working diligently to try and resolve it even right now. Jamar Samuels has worked extremely hard academically and athletically throughout his career. We are certainly going to do everything we can to advocate for him.”

The 6-7 Samuels, who did not attempt a shot in Thursday’s win over So. Miss, is on the bench. He is averaging 10.3 points, 6.6 rebounds per game. K-State is 12-1 this year when he has a double-double.

Freshman Thomas Gipson will start in his spot. He has started 21 games and is averaging 7.0 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Currie offered no timetable on when Samuels could possibly be cleared to play, but said K-State is working rapidly to do so.
Syracuse is also without their 7-foot big man Fab Melo, who is also ineligible.
