NFL Mock Draft: Three Round Edition

watson-mahomes-041717-getty-ftrjpg_14fugamof02a11r7d05jxs5ylu

The NFL Draft is one day away, and it’s time for the second installment of my 2016 NFL Mock Draft. These picks based upon whom I believe these teams need to take, given their current roster and draft tendencies. Once again, I collaborated with Brandon Norris, but unlike our first mock, we’re mocking three rounds this time.

Round 1, Pick 1: Cleveland Browns

My Pick: EDGE Myles Garrett (Texas A&M)

Brandon’s Pick: EDGE Garrett

Neither of our picks changed here. The Browns need an impact rusher who can make the lives of Ben Rothelisberger and Joe Flacco living hell.

Round 1, Pick 2: San Francisco 49ers

My Pick: EDGE Solomon Thomas (Stanford)

Brandon’s Pick: Thomas

The 49ers need pass rushers, and Thomas reminds me of Julius Peppers on tape.

Round 1, Pick 3: Chicago Bears

My Pick: WR Mike Williams (Clemson)

Brandon’s Pick: CB Marshon Lattimore (Ohio State)

Mike Glennon needs someone to make plays for him. Do you really trust Cameron Meredith, Eddie Royal, or Markus Wheaton? Bears need help all over, a play-maker in the secondary will do, too.

Round 1, Pick 4: Jacksonville Jaguars

My Pick: RB Leonard Fournette (LSU)

Brandon’s Pick: Fournette

With all the defensive additions the Jaguars have made, I get the feeling they’ll address the offense here. A major upgrade over T.J Yeldon and Chris Ivory, Fournette would provide the balance to the offense that QB Blake Bortles needs.

Round 1, Pick 5: Tennessee Titans

My Pick: CB Marshon Lattimore (Ohio State)

Brandon’s Pick: WR Corey Davis (Western Michigan)

The Titans have a rising team, but they need corners that can play on the outside. Logan Ryan was a great start, but Lattimore has “shutdown” ability. Davis could be the WR1 Mariota desperately needs to reach elite status.

Round 1, Pick 6: New York Jets

My Pick: FS Malik Hooker (Ohio State)

Brandon’s Pick: S Jamal Adams (LSU)

While Trubisky could be the QB the Jets franchise needs, Hooker or Adams gives their secondary some legitimacy and helps solve the Rob Gronkowksi problem. By the way…good luck with that/

Round 1, Pick 7: Los Angeles Chargers

My Pick: S Jamal Adams (LSU)

Brandon’s Pick: S Malik Hooker (Ohio State)

Adams is a hard-hitting tone setter that would help stop the passing attacks of the AFC West. Hooker would be an equally-nice addition.

Round 1, Pick 8: Carolina Panthers

My Pick: WR John Ross (Washington)

Brandon’s Pick: Ross

Carolina needs a speedy receiver after losing Ted Ginn Jr. to division-rival Saints, and Ross is the fastest player in this year’s class (4.22 40).

Round 1, Pick 9: Cincinnati Bengals

My Pick: DE Jonathan Allen (Alabama)

Brandon’s Pick: T Garrett Bolles (Utah)

The Bengals have bled talent the last two years, and Allen adds depth and versatility along a front that needs it. Bolles would help aid in the loss of stud veteran Andrew Whitworth.

Round 1, Pick 10: Buffalo Bills

My Pick: WR Corey Davis (Western Michigan)

Brandon’s Pick: DL Jonathan Allen (Alabama)

The Bills need receivers in the worst kind of way, and Davis has WR1 abilities that could elevate the play of Tyrod Taylor. Williams is a physical sideline presence built to dominate in the red zone. As for Allen, another Alabama defensive player, will instantly help any team he joins.

Round 1, Pick 11: New Orleans Saints

My Pick: DE Derek Barnett (Tennessee)

Brandon’s Pick: CB Tredavious White (LSU)

You could use this phrase for any offseason in the last five years, but the Saints need help on defense. Barnett energizes the pass rush, and in Brandon’s case, Adams adds some toughness to a woebegone secondary.

Round 1, Pick 12: Cleveland Browns

My pick: QB Mitch Trubisky (North Carolina)

Brandon’s Pick: TE O.J Howard (Alabama)

The Browns need offense. Well, they really need anything. Trubisky showed poise and NFL-readiness in his one-year stint as North Carolina’s starter. Howard has NFL TE written all over him.

Round 1, Pick 13: Arizona Cardinals

My Pick: CB Gareon Conley (Ohio State)

Brandon’s Pick: WR Mike Williams (Clemson)

The Cards had corner problems opposite Patrick Peterson all year last season, but who is going to take Larry Fitzgerald’s role as WR1? Conley had some legal issues arise today, so there’s a chance he could plummet down the board.

Round 1, Pick 14: Philadelphia Eagles

My Pick: CB Marlon Humphrey (Alabama)

Brandon’s Pick: RB Christian McCaffrey (Stanford)

The Eagles need corners. Period. As for McCaffery, many draft experts are saying teams should stay away in the first round, but he seems like a Doug Pederson back.

Round 1, Pick 15: Indianapolis Colts

My Pick: EDGE Takkarist McKinley (UCLA)

Brandon’s Pick: OT Ryan Ramczyk (Wisconsin)

I really wanted to put Dalvin Cook in the backfield with Andrew Luck, but their defense needs help, and Chris Ballard has already added many bodies on defense in effort to improve a terrible (and aging) squad. For Brandon’s pick, it’s always a good idea to invest in protecting the now oft-injured Andrew Luck.

Round 1, Pick 16: Baltimore Ravens

My Pick: ILB Reuben Foster (Alabama)

Brandon’s Pick: DE Derek Barnett (Tennessee)

Ozzie Newsome loves his Alabama players, and the Ravens need an inside backer. Foster would be a steal at this point, but his recent failed drug test could send him down the draft, ala Just Houston. If so, Barnett makes sense here.

Round 1, Pick 17: Washington Redskins

My Pick: RB Dalvin Cook (Florida St.)

Brandon’s Pick: CB Gareon Conley (Ohio State)

I don’t see Cook falling further than this, and the Redskins may need to run more with the loss of DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon. Conley likely will fall after this recent potential legal issue arose, but, the dude can play.

Round 1, Pick 18: Tennessee Titans

My Pick: OLB Hasson Reddick (Temple)

Brandon’s Pick: CB Kevin King (Washington)

The Titans double up on their defense with a versatile backer who could play on the edge or inside, or try to improve their pass defense.

Round 1, Pick 19: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

My Pick: RB Christian McCaffrey (Stanford)

Brandon’s Pick: RB Dalvin Cook (Florida St.)

McCaffrey can catch, run, and return. He’s the more versatile and less injury-prone version of Doug Martin. If Cook is still here, as Brandon suggests, take him.

Round 1, Pick 20: Denver Broncos

My Pick: TE O.J Howard (Alabama)

Brandon’s Pick: OT Cam Robinson (Alabama)

The Chiefs have Travis Kelce, and the Chargers have Hunter Henry. If you can’t beat them, join them? And, the Broncos tight end production last year was, porous. Robinson, another Alabama product, can help improve an offensive line that was not great at protecting the QB in 2016.

Round 1, Pick 21: Detroit Lions

My Pick:  DT Malik McDowell (Michigan State)

Brandon’s Pick: EDGE Takkarist McKinley (UCLA)

Lions fans still have nightmares of Thomas Rawls….

Round 1, Pick 22: Miami Dolphins

My Pick: EDGE Taco Charlton (Michigan)

Brandon’s Pick: Charlton

The Dolphins need young edge rushers after cutting Mario Williams and seeing Cameron Wake not getting any younger, and we’re in agreement here that Taco Charlton fits.

Round 1, Pick 23: New York Giants

My Pick: T Cam Robinson (Alabama)

Brandon’s Pick: QB Mitch Trubisky (North Carolina)

McCaffrey could be the do-it-all back Eli Manning needs, but a better offensive line wouldn’t hurt either. In Brandon’s case, the Giants replace a fast-declining quarterback with a young buck entering an already loaded offense.

Round 1, Pick 24: Oakland Raiders

My Pick: EDGE Charles Harris (Missouri)

Brandon’s Pick: ILB Jarrad Davis (Florida)

Aldon Smith isn’t coming back, so the Raiders need to continue to add talented pass rushers to the fold. Harris, yet another talented defensive lineman coming out of Mizzou, is one of the best pass rushers in this year’s class. Davis would be a nice addition to a linebacker group lacking speed.

Round 1, Pick 25: Houston Texans

My Pick: CB TreDavious White (LSU)

Brandon’s Pick: QB DeShaun Watson (Clemson)

With A.J Bouye gone, the Texans need an immediate starter in the secondary. After admitting their mistake with Brock Osweiler and with fall back plan Tony Romo “retired,” Houston needs a quarterback, and fast.

Round 1, Pick 26: Seattle Seahawks

My Pick: OT Ryan Ramcyzk (Wisconsin)

Brandon’s Pick: OL Forrest Lamp (Western Kentucky)

Seattle’s offensive line needs all the help they can get. With Richard Sherman being mentioned in trade talks, a a corner here (TreDavious White, maybe) would be a nice pick, but I don’t see it just yet.

Round 1, Pick 27: Kansas City Chiefs

My Pick: QB Deshaun Watson (Clemson)

Brandon’s Pick: QB Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech)

The Chiefs get their franchise guy, and they get to sit behind and learn from of the NFL’s smartest quarterbacks.

Round 1, Pick 28: Dallas Cowboys

My Pick: CB Kevin King (Washington)

Brandon’s Pick: DL Malik McDowell (Michigan State)

The Cowboys need young bodies at corner, and they lost Morris Claiborne in free agency.  McDowell will provide an upgrade to the interior of the Cowboys run defense.

Round 1, Pick 29: Green Bay Packers

My Pick: LB/S Jabril Peppers (Michigan)

Brandon’s Pick: LB Zach Cunningham (Vanderbilt)

Peppers is the versatile player the Packers need in their secondary, but with his recent failed drug test, he’ll likely slide, so Cunningham, arguably the draft class’ best run stopper, could provide the Packers defense some much needed help in the middle.

Round 1, Pick 30: Pittsburgh Steelers

My Pick: CB Chidobe Awuzie (Colorado)

Brandon’s Pick: TE David Njoku (Miami)

The Steelers need help at cornerback after, once again, after being torched by Tom Brady. Njoku is the seam threat the Steelers need after watching Ladarius Green’s season go down with injuries.

Round 1, Pick 31: Atlanta Falcons

My Pick: G Forrest Lamp (Western Kentucky)

Brandon’s Pick: LB Haason Reddick (Temple)

Lamp’s versatility and strength would’ve helped the Falcons in the second half of the Super Bowl…if they had decided to run the ball. And, let’s not forget, the Falcons defense was nothing special and they can use help on defense.

Round 1, Pick 32: New Orleans Saints

My Pick: SS Obi Melifonwu (Connecticut)

Brandon’s Pick: QB Deshone Kizer (Notre Dame)

Melifonwu torched the combine, and he would help patch up a needy defense. The Saints also need to start thinking about a replacement for Drew Brees.

My Pick: WR Chris Godwin (Penn State)

Brandon’s Pick: CB Marlon Humphrey (Alabama)

Round 2, Pick 34: San Francisco 49ers

Brandon’s Pick: CB Chidobe Awuzie (Colorado)

Brandon’s Pick: RB Alvin Kamara (Tennessee)

Round 2, Pick 41: Cincinnati Bengals

My Pick: G Dan Feeney (Indiana)

Brandon’s Pick: RB Joe Mixon (Oklahoma)

Interesting pick here by Brandon, considering not only Mixon’s off-field incident but the presence of Jeremy Hill and Gio Bernard in the Cincy backfield.

My Pick: FS Marcus Williams (Utah)

Brandon’s Pick: S Jabril Peppers (Michigan)
