College Football’s Week 11 Marquee Matchups and Upset Alerts

To quote Gary Pinkel, "Those who win in November will be remembered." Pinkel announced today that he will retire at the end of the season to focus on a bigger opponent, lymphoma. We wish Coach Pinkel the best of luck with his health and his post-football life. That quote seems fitting as we hit the home stretch of the regular season. The stakes are getting bigger every week as teams fight for bowl eligibility, conference titles, and playoff spots. Let's see where the big games are this week. Marquee Matchups 2 Alabama (8-1) at 17 Mississippi State (7-2) - Saturday, 2:30, CBS This is Alabama's toughest test until a possible date with Florida in the SEC Championship. Derrick Henry and the Tide ran all over LSU last week in an impressive 30-16 win, but that doesn't mean Dak Prescott and company will roll over for them. Far from it. The Bulldogs will be fired up and have had extra time to prepare for this one after playing last Thursday. The recipe will be the same for [Read more...]

College Football’s Week 9 Marquee Match-ups and Upset Alerts

Another a ho-hum slate of games this week with only one match-up of ranked teams, but if you're looking for something to watch before or after the Royals game, here are your best options: Georgia (5-2) vs. 15 Florida (6-1) - Saturday, 2:30, CBS "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" is what they call it down south when the Gators and Bulldogs square off in Jacksonville. SEC East title implications are on the line here, but this game doesn't have quite as much hype with Georgia's Nick Chubb injured and Florida's Will Grier suspended. This one has low-scoring slobber-knocker written all over it. Florida rebounds after the loss to LSU as the Georgia passing game continues to struggle. Prediction: 23-13 Florida 8 Notre Dame (6-1) at 21 Temple (7-0) - Saturday, 7:00, ABC Could a team from the American Athletic Conference sneak into the playoff? Memphis, Houston, and Temple are all 7-0. Only one of them can finish the season undefeated. Memphis had a signature win [Read more...]

College Football’s Week 8 Marquee Match-ups and Upset Alerts

A pretty weak slate of games compared to last week. After a loaded week 7 with five match-ups of ranked teams squaring off, there's only one this week. But as I always say, college football never disappoints, so don't let the lack of big games prevent you from being camped in front of the TV on Saturday. Marquee Match-ups 17 Texas A&M (5-1) at 23 Ole Miss (5-2) - Saturday, 6:00, ESPN Here's your only match-up of ranked teams this week. Both are coming off losses last week (A&M to Alabama, Ole Miss to Memphis).  Contrary to how they looked last Saturday, the Aggies and Rebels are still right in the thick of things in the SEC West. Mississippi rebounds at home and continues to control its own destiny in the West. Prediction: 30-27 Ole Miss 5 Utah (6-0) at USC (3-3) - Saturday, 6:30, Fox I had this in mind as an upset alert until I found out USC (-3.5) is actually favored at home, making Utah the first Top 5 dog against and unranked team in the last 25 years.  [Read more...]

College Football’s Week 7 Marquee Match-ups and Upset Alerts

This week's slate is pretty loaded, so let's get right to it. Marquee Match-ups 17 UCLA (4-1) at 15 Stanford (4-1) - Thursday, 9:30, ESPN Both teams are fresh off bye weeks here, but come in with different morale. Stanford has won four games in a row, while UCLA was spanked by Arizona State their last time out. Consider this a playoff elimination game. Stanford stays in the driver's seat in the Pac 12 North as UCLA struggles without Myles Jack. Prediction: 31-23 Stanford 18 Iowa (6-0) at 23 Northwestern (4-1) - Saturday, 11:00am, ABC After sarcastically voting Northwestern number one in our poll last week because I was unimpressed with everyone else at the top, the Wildcats proceeded to lose 38-0 at Michigan. (I voted Utah number one this week, so they'll probably lose). We'll see how Northwestern responds against an unbeaten Iowa team, who's enjoyed nice wins over Wisconsin and Illinois the past couple weeks. At the risk of jinxing Northwestern again, I like them to [Read more...]

College Football’s Week 3 Marquee Matchups and Upset Special Alerts

There was some great action last week. Oregon/Michigan State lived up to the hype, BYU had another Hail Mary prayer answered, and the mighty SEC West had a humbling weekend with Arkansas falling to Toledo and Auburn needing overtime to squeak by FCS Jacksonville State. Week 3 has the potential to be equally as exciting, so just like last week, we'll check out the biggest match-ups and see which teams are on upset alert. Marquee Match-ups: Auburn at #LSU (Saturday, 2:30, CBS) Auburn is making me look foolish for picking them to win the SEC and make the playoff. Sloppy performances against Louisville and Jacksonville State make it hard to pick them at LSU. Les Miles' bunch is fresh off a nice road win over Mississippi State. In a tight game, Leonard Fournette does enough and LSU capitalizes on some Jeremy Johnson turnovers. Prediction: 24-20 LSU Georgia Tech at Notre Dame (Saturday, 2:30, NBC) This is Georgia Tech's first real test of the season after blowing out Alcorn [Read more...]

College Football’s Week 2 Marquee Matchups and Upset Special Alerts

Week one of the 2015 college football campaign didn't disappoint. Let's take a look at the week two slate, highlight some big games and see which teams are in danger.  Marquee Match-ups 18 Boise State at 23 BYU (Saturday, 9:15, ESPN2)  What will BYU do for an encore after that thrilling win at Nebraska last week? Tanner Mangum will continue to quarterback the Cougars after coming on in relief last Saturday when starter, Taysom Hill, broke his leg. Boise took care of business in week one, beating Washington 16-13 last Thursday. Defense travels and BYU will have a little hangover from the Nebraska game. Prediction: 27-17 Boise State 17 Oklahoma at 22 Tennessee (Saturday, 5:00, ESPN) We'll see if there's any substance to the Tennessee-hype here when Bob Stoops and company visit the Vols in Knoxville. Both teams cruised to easy wins against MAC opponents last week. A bit troubling for Tennessee is their defense, which allowed 600+ yards of offense to Bowling Green. This [Read more...]

Glory Years: Royals and Chiefs Contenders at the Same Time

Ah, what a time to be a Royals and Chiefs fan. The reigning American League champions are picking up where they left off last season, while the gridiron gang across the parking lot has won 20 games in the last two years. Both franchises have been around since the '60s, but rarely have they been this good at the same time. Let's break it down, starting in 1969 - the Royals' inaugural season and the year the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.
