Big 12 Today 2/4/12

MU-KU will steal the show for the Big 12 tonight on the national stage, but there are four other games in the conference today. 6 Baylor @ Oklahoma State, 12:47 (ESPN3/Big 12 Network): Baylor will be on upset alert today when they head to Stillwater, hoping to avoid the upset loss that Missouri suffered. Baylor won the first meeting in Waco by 40. Texas A&M @ Kansas State, 3 (ESPN3/Big 12 Network/FSKC): Suddenly, KState is a bubble team. This is a must win for Frank Martin, as KState is below .500 in Big 12 play (4-5). Iowa State @ Oklahoma, 5 (ESPN2): "Rolls" Royce White and the 'Clones are on the verge of being ranked, and are certainly a NCAA tournament team. But winning in Norman has not been the easiest thing to do, as KState lost there. A win, doubled with a Missouri win, and Iowa State is just a game out of the Big 12's top spot. Texas Tech @ Texas, 7 (Longhorn Network): Halfway through Big 12 play, Texas has just three wins - Iowa State, Texas A&M and [Read more...]

Big 12 1/23/12: MU’s Ratliffe earns POW honors, 3 Big 12 teams in Top 7 nationally, Player(s) and Team of the Week and Power Rankings

Brian Graham, KC SportsNation What, a Missouri player won Big 12 Player of the Week? Not to be funny or cynical, but I really did think Mizzou (A&M too) would be locked out of winning any sort of an award from the Big 12 this year. Kim English, by far my most favorite Tiger, who tweeted, "Really? The Big 12 did that? I'm so surprised. I didn't think us or A&M would get one this year." The award went to senior 6-8 post Ricardo Ratliffe. He scored a career-high 27 points to go with eight rebounds - six offensive - as Missouri won 89-88 in Waco over No. 3 Baylor. He went 11-for-14 from the field, and now has a 77.2 field goal percentage on the season. That’s on track to break Steve Johnson’s Division I record of 74.6 percent in 1980-81. How efficient has Ratliffe been? Consider that he’d need to miss his next 18 shots just to fall into second place in the nation. For the week, he averaged 22 points, 7 rebounds a game - going a pedestrian 16-21 from the field [Read more...]

Big 12 Basketball Power Rankings, Mid-season All-Conference Team

Now that conference play begins tonight with Texas A&M at Baylor and football is winding down, its time for the first KC SportsNation Big 12 Basketball Power Poll and Mid-Season (beginning of conference play) All-Conference team (as if the season ended today). 1. Baylor (13-0): Baylor has the best talent in the conference, bar none. But they also have the worst coach. What will happen? They, along with Missouri, Kansas and to a lesser extent, Kansas State are the favorites to win the conference this year. Baylor has not won a conference title since 1945. JUCO transfer point guard Pierre Jackson (12.2 points per game, 4.4 assists per game) and Boston College transfer Brady Heslip (10.8 ppg) have been great backcourt additions, joining its future NBA frontcourt, sophomore Perry Jones III (13.4 ppg, 6.8 rebounds per game), freshman Quincy Miller (10.9, 5.1 rebounds) and senior Quincy Acy (12.5, 7.5 rebounds). That being said, they are undisciplined at times and gets pushed [Read more...]

Big 12 QB comparison is no easy task

Bucky, KC SportsNation I was pondering Big 12 QBs last night and looked up two rankings that I think are important – yards per attempt and interception percentage. Here is what it said. (The Iowa State and Texas QBs didn’t have enough attempts to qualify.) Name YPA Griffin 10.83 Weeden 8.29 Jones 8.01 Franklin 7.74 Tannehill 6.96 Klein 6.95 Doege 6.89 Webb 6.70 Name INT % Griffin 1.63 Doege 1.72 Klein 1.99 Weeden 2.30 Jones 2.61 Franklin 2.83 Tannehill 2.85 Webb 4.27 Griffin would appear ill with any stats but these show his unique arm strength and accuracy. After that, it appears that you can see where the best WRs reside. How many games did we see Baylor, oSu and OU WRs take 10–15 yard passes for TDs? Griffin’s ability to break the pocket really shows in his high YPA. It doesn’t seem possible that anyone has put up those type of stats [Read more...]

RG III, four others named Heisman finalists

NEW YORK (AP)—Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck entered the season as the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He'll head into New York for Saturday's Heisman presentation as an underdog to another quarterback, Baylor's Robert Griffin III. “I’m sure it will be a really close vote,” Griffin told reporters after watching the announcement with teammates and coaches. “Being invited is an honor." Griffin leads the nation in passer rating (192.3), with 3,998 yards and 36 touchdowns. He has also run for 644 yards and nine touchdowns. Baylor is 9-3 this season, its first nine-win season since 1986, including its first-ever win over Oklahoma. Baylor has never had anyone finish higher than fourth in the Heisman voting. “Baylor nation we’re in there,” Griffin said. “Now we just got to try to snatch it. Hopefully the vote turns out our way." Alabama running back Trent Richardson, LSU defensive back and return man, the "Honey Badger" Tyrann Mathieu and Wisconsin running [Read more...]
