Marquee Matchups, Week 3

5 Houston (2-0) at Cincinnati (2-0) - Thursday 6:30pm (CST) Houston and red hot coach Tom Herman look to continue their pursuit of a spot in the college football playoff. Realistically, they are the only non-Power 5 team that has a legitimate chance to get into final 4 at the end of the season. Next up for the Cougars is a conference tilt at Cincinnati.  The Bearcats have looked good thus far but the schedule hasn’t exactly been difficult, to say the least.  Last week they knocked off a Big Ten bottom dweller in Purdue, but clearly Houston presents a much tougher test.  Cinci are more than a touchdown underdog Thursday night at home, and the Cougars will more than likely have too much speed and athleticism for them to contend with. In week 1 Houston stymied Oklahoma and surprised many with the way they controlled the game, considering the Sooners were expected to make a deep run.  If Houston does happen to go undefeated, it might be hard to keep them out over several of the one and [Read more...]

College Football Week 13 Ramblings, Marquee Matchups and Upset Specials

By Tom Hanken and Andrew Reichmeier   Marquee Match-ups 7 Baylor (9-1) at 19 TCU (9-2) - Friday, 6:30, ESPN Despite all the injuries, TCU put up quite the fight at Oklahoma last week. Baylor is down to its third-strong quarterback now, so they're no stranger to the injury list either. Trevone Boykin is expected to return for TCU, so this should be a classic Big 12 shootout. It's hard to pick against Baylor after how good they looked at OSU last week. The Bears will be playing with a sense of urgency as they try to keep their playoff hopes alive. Prediction: 41-34 Baylor 8 Ohio State (10-1) at 10 Michigan (9-2) - Saturday, 11am, ABC "The Game" is back! Leave it to Jim Harbaugh and his khakis to make this rivalry marquee again. Ohio State, like Michigan earlier in the year, just lost to Michigan State on the last play of the game, last week. I'm curious to see how the Buckeyes respond after their first loss. Khakis will have something up his sleeve, but I [Read more...]

College Football Week 12 Rankings, Ramblings and Marquee Matchups and Upset Specials

By Tom Hanken and Andrew Reichmeier Rankings   *** Ramblings *** There's some BIG games this week, so let's get right to it. Marquee Match-ups (rankings reflect the College Football Playoff poll) 9 Michigan State (9-1) at 3 Ohio State (10-0) - Saturday, 2:30, ABC This game has been talked about for months, but as it finally arrives, it seems like these Big Ten powerhouses are flying under the radar a little bit. Despite winning the national title last year and a 10-0 start this season, Ohio State is behind Clemson and Alabama in the playoff rankings. Michigan State has to be feeling disrespected as well. Four one-loss teams are ranked ahead of the Spartans, whose lone slip-up came at Nebraska a few weeks ago. Urban Meyer has only lost one B1G game, the Big Ten Championship game to Sparty. He is also undefeated in regular season conference play, that streak will continue. Ohio State is getting 13.5 points here. I like Sparty to cover that spread, but the Buckeyes will [Read more...]

To quote Gary Pinkel, "Those who win in November will be remembered." Pinkel announced today that he will retire at the end of the season to focus on a bigger opponent, lymphoma. We wish Coach Pinkel the best of luck with his health and his post-football life. That quote seems fitting as we hit the home stretch of the regular season. The stakes are getting bigger every week as teams fight for bowl eligibility, conference titles, and playoff spots. Let's see where the big games are this week. Marquee Matchups 2 Alabama (8-1) at 17 Mississippi State (7-2) - Saturday, 2:30, CBS This is Alabama's toughest test until a possible date with Florida in the SEC Championship. Derrick Henry and the Tide ran all over LSU last week in an impressive 30-16 win, but that doesn't mean Dak Prescott and company will roll over for them. Far from it. The Bulldogs will be fired up and have had extra time to prepare for this one after playing last Thursday. The recipe will be the same for [Read more...]
