Week 1 College Football Ramblings

Heisman Favorites 1.     QB Trevone Boykin (TCU) 2.     Ohio State player of your choice 3.     QB Cody Keesler (USC) 4.     QB  Malik Zaire (Notre Dame)       Playoff Predictions 1.     Ohio State 2.     TCU 3.     Georgia 4.     UCLA Only a win (or loss) away ·       USC ·       Alabama ·       Michigan State It must be bowl season…The B1G looks over matched and the SEC is making statement after statement. You could not have asked for a worse start for the B1G. That being said, the conference needs credit for scheduling some big time opponents like Alabama, Stanford, BYU (twice), TCU, Oregon, Miami (FL), Oregon St., Utah, Pitt, Virginia Tech (2), North Carolina, and West Virginia early on this season. Fans in burnt orange should be concerned, they played a tough opponent but we extremely overmatched, not what they want to see out of their Horns early in the season. The rest of us love it. Now, they have [Read more...]

Conference Championship Week and College Football Playoff Ramblings

Heisman Hopefuls: 1. RB Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin) 2. QB Marcus Mariota (Oregon) 3. QB J.T. Barrett (Ohio St.) 4. QB Dak Prescott (Mississippi St.) Top 4: Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, Ohio State Playoff Matchups: Alabama vs Ohio State; Oregon vs Florida State Conference Power Rankings: SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, B1G, ACC *** Brian already wrote about the College Football Playoff Committee having their hands full trying to select one team out of three very similar and deserving teams, but I think they got the four best teams in the country aligned into the playoff. Baylor and TCU seemed to be slighted because of the lack of a 13th game against a quality opponent; that combined with the impressive play of the Buckeyes (11 straight wins – 9 against bowl-eligible teams and 59-0 Big Ten Championship win over Wisconsin) made it easy on the committee to leave them out. Some conspiracy theorist may say that the helmets played out in this scenario and TV ratings were a factor. Those theories [Read more...]

Baseball Ramblings: Stanton’s Mega Deal, Country Breakfast heads West and what it all means for the Royals

The “Hot Stove” is really cooking right now. Yeah…that was lame. I apologize. This past weekend kicked off with the Marlins dropping a bomb in signing slugger Giancarlo Stanton to a record $325 Million contract over the next 13 seasons. That’s a lot of money, man. Good for you, the man formerly known as Mike Stanton. But, as for the rest of baseball…O U C H. That’s good for $68,449 EACH DAY for 13 YEARS. A number of people had speculated after watching the lengthy rich contracts of Barry Zito, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and the like, crash and burn near the middle of the contract term, or beginning in Zito’s case, that it may signal the end of the 10+ year mega deals. WELP. No. Then, on Monday, 31 year old free agent catcher, Russell Martin inked a 5-year, $82 million deal with the Blue Jays. Also on Monday, the Atlanta Braves sent outfielder Jason Heyward and relief pitcher Jordan Walden to the St. Louis Cardinals for starting pitcher Shelby Miller and minor league arm, [Read more...]

College Football Ramblings, Week 12

Heisman Hopefuls: 1. RB Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin), 2. QB Marcus Mariota (Oregon), 3. QB J.T. Barrett (Ohio St.), 4. QB Dak Prescott (Miss St.) Top 4: Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, Ohio State Playoff Projections: Florida St, Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State Conference power rankings: SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, B1G, ACC *** Big changes to my top 4 and Heisman list this week. Barrett jumps to third – he is having a fantastic season while leading Ohio State to a 9-1 record and almost certainly to a conference title and a playoff spot. Most people thought that Ohio State and was going to miss Braxton Miller, now the question is how will Meyer handle the quarterbacks next year when Miller returns? Auburn wins a close game at the 1-yard line at Ole Miss, loses a close home game fumbling inside the 5 in the final minutes, then they travel to Athens, Ga and get housed by the Dawgs. Life in the SEC is truly brutal. Todd Gurley made his presence felt the first time he touched the ball Saturday [Read more...]

Separation Saturday College Football Ramblings

Heisman hopefuls: QB Marcus Mariota (Oregon), QB Dak Prescott (Miss St.), QB Trevone Boykin (TCU), RB Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska), and RB Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin) Top 4: Miss St, Florida St, Oregon, Alabama Playoff Projections: Florida St, Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State Conference power rankings: SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, B1G, ACC *** Northwestern must be tired of seeing the Michigan uniform, back to back overtime losses and then they lose on a failed two conversion while going for the win against the maize and blue. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald went against the book and went for two and the win at home, instead of the tie. Obviously, it backfired, as they lost 10-9. The B1G has been fighting to build up its reputation nationally then they come out and have a game like that or that ugly Penn St-Indiana game. You cannot watch the B1G and then turn it to the SEC and not think they are drastic differences in their products. Yes, they are good quality teams at the top of the conference, but top [Read more...]

College Football Ramblings, Week 10: A look ahead to Week 11

Heisman: QB Dak Prescott (Miss. St.), RB Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska), QB Trevone Boykin (TCU), QB Jameis Winston (Florida St.) and QB Marcus Mariota (Oregon) Top 4: Miss St, Florida St, Auburn, Michigan State Playoff Projections: Florida St, Auburn, Oregon, Michigan State Conference power rankings: SEC, Big 12, Pac 12, B1G, ACC *** Want to start a rivalry with a neighboring school in your first year in a new conference? Do not shake the opposing team’s hands for the opening coin flip. Maryland coach Randy Edsall wants the make Maryland and Penn State a rivalry game, looks like he is well on his way. It has the makings of one, too, as Penn St. has a bunch of Maryland players on their roster. The season rolls on and the games are getting bigger, the pressure is mounting… More big games this week across the nation: Kansas St at TCU: This game should be fantastic. The classic teacher vs. pupil, Jedi vs Padawon, strength vs. strength match-up that we all love. Snyder’s defense [Read more...]

College Football Ramblings, Week 9

Heisman: QB Dak Prescott (Mississippi St.), RB Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska), QB Trevone Boykin (TCU), QB Jameis Winston (Florida St.), WR Amari Cooper (Alabama) Top 4: Miss St, Florida St, Michigan State, Alabama Playoff Projections: Florida St, Auburn, Oregon, Notre Dame Conference power rankings: SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, B1G, ACC *** It was a record setting day for a pair of Huskers Kenny Bell and Ameer Abdullah. Bell, the senior wide receiver set the all-time receptions record (167) at Nebraska and only needs six more yards to set the all-time receiving yards record (Johnny Rodgers). Bell is a guy that loves blocking in the run game as much as he loves catching the ball. Rodgers record is the most impressive part out of all of this, he set that record while playing in an option heavy offense. The school’s receiving record of 2,473 is the lowest of any school in the B1G. Abdullah, also a senior, became the school record holder for all-purpose yards in a single game, passing Roy Helu, [Read more...]

College Football Ramblings, Week 8

Brian Graham contributed to this report Heisman Watch: QB Dak Prescott (Miss St.), RB Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin), QB Jameis Winston (Florida St.), and WR Amari Cooper (Alabama) Playoff Picture Top 4: Miss St, Ole Miss, Florida St, Michigan State Playoff Projections: Florida St, Mississippi St, Oregon, Notre Dame Conference power rankings: SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, B1G, ACC *** In a wide-open college football season we must not forget that Auburn was ranked 24 at this time last year and Michigan State was unranked. What does this mean? It means that there is a lot of football yet to be played. It is easy to miss that Florida, Texas, and Michigan are only getting noticed because of the lack of success. It baffles me that Florida and Texas can have 5-star talent running all over the field but have such a lack of talent at key positions, noticeably, QB. The Egg Bowl (Ole Miss-Miss St) looks like it is going to decide the SEC West and may be a playoff game of sorts. Remember when [Read more...]

College Football Ramblings: Upset Saturday Fallout

Heisman: RB Todd Gurley (Georgia), RB Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska), RB Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin), QB Jameis Winston (Florida St.), and QB Dak Prescott (Mississippi St.) Top 4: Auburn, Florida St, Baylor, Notre Dame Playoff Projections: Florida St, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Auburn Conference power rankings: SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, ACC, B1G *** Upset Saturday. There’s at least one every year. But, we don’t remember one like this one. Three Top 5 teams lost; five of the Top 10 and 10 ranked teams. This weekend’s craziness is just a sign to come! The SEC and especially the SEC West is going to be a roller coaster ride with huge games every week with teams falling one week and getting a huge week the next. Next week, Auburn at Mississippi State, Ole Miss at Texas A&M, Alabama at Arkansas, Georgia at Missouri. All huge games. Does a Missouri win mean that the SEC East race is over? They will have a 2-game lead and the tie-breaker. South Carolina has been eliminated from East [Read more...]

College Football Ramblings, Week 5

Heisman Watch: RB Todd Gurley (Georgia), RB Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska), RB Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin), QB Jameis Winston (Florida St.), and QB Kenny “Trill” Hill (Texas A&M) Top 4: Florida State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Auburn Conference power rankings: SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, ACC, B1G *** Kansas, 2-2 this year, makes their move and fires their 6-22 coach. In two seasons + four games, they won one conference game and beat just three FBS teams. We speculated that it was going to happen at the end of the year, but Kansas making the move this early suggest that there must be off the field issues – one such story indicates that he fell asleep, in front of the team, in a team meeting. My early candidates off the top of my head are: Tim Beck, current Nebraska Offensive Coordinator/QB coach and KU offensive coordinator under Mark Mangino and former Texas high school coach, Scott Frost Oregon Offensive Coordinator, Pep Hamilton, current Colts offensive coordinator and former Stanford offensive [Read more...]
